Acts of Compassion

A team from our church went to Carbon, Texas, to join others in a clean-up effort after the fire last week. They returned with stories of horrific loss and pain but also resilience, faith, and unity. The outpouring of compassion from surrounding communities has been inspiring to see. When we serve others in the name of Jesus we shine a bright light into a dark world. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, NKJV).

Acts of compassion marked the ministry of Jesus. When Peter describes the life of Jesus to the family of Cornelius, he says, “You know what happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached – how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went about doing good…” (Acts 10:37-38, NIV). Jesus was filled with Holy Spirit and He went throughout the land doing good. What a testimony! Those who belong to God are filled with His Spirit and they are known for doing good. Devoted followers of Jesus Christ should have a testimony of good works for others.

Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian organization that helps with humanitarian aid all over the world. They presently have a field hospital set up in Ukraine. Based upon the story of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:30-37, this group seeks to follow the example of Jesus by ministering to others in crisis situations. In the story, after the Samaritan helps the man who was beaten and left for dead, Jesus says to the group, “Go and do likewise” (vs.37). The theme for this group is a good theme for every believer: “to follow the example of Christ by helping those in need and proclaiming the hope of the Gospel.”

There is no end to the needs we find in a broken world. You do not have to look very far to find a need you can meet. Meeting others needs does not have to be through an organization or group, you can serve in the name of Jesus by helping a neighbor, blessing a child, visiting with a shut-in, or taking food to a family going through grief. You and I can encourage those who are down-hearted through a card, phone call, or text message. The Bible says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:10, NIV). Keep your eyes open today to needs you can meet as a follower of Christ. Your compassion will bless others as you glorify Jesus Christ.
