During a high school football practice many years ago, the coach prepared us for wind sprints and other conditioning drills with the words, “You better give your soul to God because your body belongs to me.” Of course, he was wrong. The Christian’s soul and body both belong to God. He cares what you do with your body. Paul declared that our bodies are not our own (I Corinthians 6:19.) Why?
Your body is filled with the Spirit of God. The scripture says, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?” (I Corinthians 6:19, NLT). The Spirit of God wants to guide your thoughts, form your words and direct your behavior. The old adage that says, “It is my life and I’ll live it how I want to,” is not true for the believer. Your body is a temple in which God lives through His Spirit.
Your body has been purchased by God. The Bible says, “For you were bought at a price;” (I Corinthians 6:20, NKJ). The blood of Jesus that was shed at the cross paid the price for you. Paul told the church at Ephesus, “…he bought you with his own blood” (Acts 20:28, NIV). We were not purchased with gold and silver. God did not buy us with money that can perish. He bought us with the blood of His Son (I Peter 2:19). Jesus died both to purify us from sin but also to purchase us to God. You are of great value – in body and spirit.
Your body is set apart for the glory of God. Paul proclaims, “…glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (I Corinthians 6:20, NKJ). Chapter six in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is about holiness. The church has indulged in various forms of sexual impurity. They are not sorry for their sins, but are boasting about them. His chastening words are a call to repentance. He says, in effect, that you have taken what belongs to God and abused and misused it. Instead of bringing God glory through your body, you have brought insult and shame.
Your body belongs to God and He wants you to work with Him so that it is beautiful, holy and pure. Your attitudes, words and actions should say to the world, “This body belongs to God.” A popular t-shirt several years ago promoted a workout facility and simply said, “Gold’s Gym.” A Christian group played off the words on their own t-shirt and with similar font and color said, “God’s Gym.” Yes, God is in you and working through you to shape your life to bring glory to Him. He has this right because you belong to Him.
